One of my favorite trends in the last 10 years has been the “Mega Island.” Quartz and Granite slabs are usually available in sizes 5’ x 10’ and larger. Generally, this dimension has been available so that 2 standard countertops and back splashes can be cut out of one piece; however, these large slabs make an amazing centerpiece for kitchens.
These mega islands can have sinks, cooktops, or any other kitchen feature, but one thing they almost always include is bar seating. Since the kitchen is the social center of most homes, this accommodates friends and family hanging out without being under the feet of the cook.

We have built many mega islands for our customers. For some, there is a kitchen already large enough to accommodate such an architectural feature; however, for the majority we are opening walls to a great room, or taking over a dining nook.
